This book is an attempt to carry out a systematic review of the more than 150-year-old history described in his memoirs, in his personal letters, as well as through the Union Army's service records and documentation from that time. The story of Hans Grorud, his regiment and period of service, is also supplemented with official army reports and reputable historians' descriptions and assessments of the events of the Civil War, in which Hans Grorud participated from 1862 - 1865.
The last existing copy (of originally 5) of Hans Grorud's memoirs from the Civil War in the United States of America 1861-1865. The memoirs were probably written around 1920, more than 50 years after the war.
